Service FAQ’s

What will happen during my first treatment?

The first time you come, after filling out paperwork, we will talk about you and your life. Chinese Medicine looks at you as a whole person, rather than as a collection of symptoms. I will ask what brings you to my office as well as finding out about your diet, your sleep, your menstrual cycle (if female), your emotions, etc. Generally, I spend between 20-50 minutes talking to you before we do an acupuncture session. There is ample time to ask questions and I encourage you to do so. This is your body and I see myself as having expertise to share with you to help you heal; ultimately it is you who does the healing.

Will it hurt?

This is a common concern; usually once people have one treatment, they realize that acupuncture not only doesn’t hurt, it is actually very relaxing. Acupuncture needles are very thin; they are not hypodermic needles. There are many styles of acupuncture; the style I practice is fairly painless. Usually you will not even feel it go in or you will feel only a slight pinch. In fact, it is so relaxing that many people come just to lower their stress level. Frequently, people fall asleep during treatments.

When will I start seeing results?

Usually you will see symptomatic improvements very quickly, within 6 sessions. Many people start seeing changes after only 1 treatment. For others, it may take a little longer. People are treated for varying lengths of time, depending upon the severity and type of their condition.

How long have you been practicing acupuncture?

I have been licensed and practicing in San Francisco since 1986.

Can I get an infection from the needles?

NO. All needles are single-use disposable needles. You will be given brand new needles each treatment and after each treatment, your needles will be properly disposed of.

Will my insurance cover acupuncture?

I am a preferred provider with Anthem Blue Cross,  United Healthcare Insurance, and Landmark Insurance. For your convenience, whether or not I am a preferred provider for your insurance, I will do the insurance billing for you if your insurance covers acupuncture. You will be responsible for paying the deductible, if applicable, and the co-pay at the time of your visit. If you are not sure if your insurance covers acupuncture, I can check it for you with your insurance company.

Do you take Workers’ Compensation?

Yes. You will need a referral from your doctor who will ask your insurance company to approve the visits. Once they approve the acupuncture sessions, I can treat you under Workers' Compensation Insurance.
